Innovation rarely happens within comfort zones. What better proof of the statement than the pandemic,
which has facilitated an opportunity for the growth of the education technology industry.
Before the pandemic, the education sector and edtech were in perfect alignment. However, the see-
sawing of their planes happened during the lockdown, cushioned by the latest technological
advancements. Needless to say, the edtech part of the education industry started thriving on the back of
demand for online learning, emphasising the importance of the learning management system.
The demand for developing a learning management system spiked dramatically during the second half of
2020. The interesting part is, that it hasn’t subsided yet. The profitability of the learning management
system is inspiring startups and enterprises to pick a slice of the profit pie of about 50-100% growth
every month. However, the challenge is that the learning management system has been cloned to the
extent that there’s only a little line separating the online learning apps.
The pace of startups surfacing and launching LMS for enterprises and educational institutions has put
even the oldest LMS back in the queue of innovation.
The fierceness of the competition in the edtech startups intensifies with experiments happening across
the world; now that the target audience can’t be put into a geographical, psychographic, or
demographical box. With the global boundaries blurring, the scope for penetrating into different end
users is becoming broad. As a result, companies operating in the education technology industry are
teaming up with the IT industry to improve the usage of their edTech products, and, in turn, their bottom
lines.
The disruption in the education technology industry is two-dimensional--one is centered towards students
and the other end at education institutions. When it comes to students, players in the market have to
resort to AI/ML and AR/VR to offer an immersive learning experience and boost learning abilities. On the
other hand, automation in the manual processes--campus management, student information system,
classroom management system, assessment software, etc.--is helping education institutions to progress
at pace using sustainable and scalable solutions.
While COVID-19 created opportunities for the education technology industry, the sector moved with
innovation to a high degree. It simply means that the basic disruption has happened in the edtech sector
as we await to find what’s next.
