Smart Rain

Top 10 Leading Smart Cities Companies To Watch In 2023

Smart Rain has created the market's most accurate weather-based smart irrigation system. According to drought.gov, 46 percent of the U.S. is facing drought. Many cities across America are dealing with detrimental drought conditions, leading them to search for water-saving solutions.

Speaking about the trends impacting the Smart City arena, Smart Rain President, Dan Hymas has said, “Artificial grass suffocates soils and breaks down their compounds, weakening the ecosystem and creating unlevel surfaces; this only creates a problem later and leads to plastics not decomposing at the landfill. Sprinklers are still used to cool artificial grass and water the shrubs in xeriscape environments. Our watering system allows for property owners and managers to maintain healthy landscapes while also significantly reducing the amount of water they use.”

Smart Rain helps educate people about wise water use, reassuring them that they don’t need to rip out their landscape in order to save water. Their focus is on municipalities, commercial, industrial, hospitality, and retail properties.

Public parks, sports fields, and schools can’t change their landscape, and they need the grass. However, water restrictions often make it difficult to keep these areas healthy and thriving. Smart Rain’s technology allows their customers to stay within local or state water restrictions while simultaneously allowing their landscape to thrive.

“We utilize three million weather data points to accurately spread the necessary water to keep the properties healthy and looking great even amid restrictions—helping property owners and managers in their effort to be good stewards of the community,” elaborates Hymas.

One of the significant challenges for anyone with stewardship over landscaping is water management. The management of water continues to become a larger topic of focus and discussion, especially as drought worsens.

“We are seeing more organizations recognizing the need for such technologies as they continue to look for ways to improve their sustainability efforts. Landscape irrigation is low-hanging fruit regarding potential savings and environmental impact at a relatively low cost of implementation,” says Hymas.

Organizations want an easy turn-key solution that they trust will deliver results. Smart Rain offers them that—from the initial sales process, to installation, to their customer success team and lifetime warranty.

The Smart Watering Solution for Commercial and Municipal Properties

Hymas says, “It’s easy to conserve water and cut bills with Smart Rain products. Our EPA-certified, LEED-qualifying SmartController™ is the loyal minion—pushing data points of weather, schedules, and more from our proprietary SmartApp™ to sprinkler heads.”

Smart Rain’s customer success team helps their clients achieve the greatest amount of savings. Smart Rain customers all have a dedicated 24/7 account manager who proactively monitors sites for efficiency, bringing in other team experts as needed.

Interactive SmartMapping™ is one of the many award-winning features of Smart Rain’s technology, allowing users to quickly identify watering zones and other equipment on an interactive map. One can manage and operate zones by clicking a zone on the map, allowing water management to be handled remotely.

Citing the first case study of Sanford in Florida, Hymas says the summer of 2022 proved challenging for the city; however, the city was able to overcome their challenges with the help of Smart Rain. With their workforce at 50 percent, the city did not have the necessary resources to check on multiple sites and review irrigation conditions. Smart Rain made it possible for their team to access sites and check conditions remotely.

Referencing the second case study, Hymas said that in recent years, San Antonio has been experiencing extreme drought. To mitigate this, city officials implemented strict irrigation restrictions—only allowing three maximum watering days during the week.

With seven athletic fields, the Burbank Sports Complex is one of the top ten water consumers in the SAISD District. To reduce their water consumption, maintain their green fields, and comply with irrigation cutbacks, SAISD knew they needed a change in their water management system.

SAISD enlisted Smart Rain to replace irrigation control systems for all sports fields in the complex. Smart Rain installed four controllers with rain sensors, which use precipitation rates to apply one inch of water per week during the hottest parts of the summer.

Through the system update and proactive management of the Burbank Sports Complex site, SAISD has been able to conserve 5,315,500 gallons of water—a 94 percent reduction—and $30,743 in just four months, while not compromising the integrity of the sports fields.

Speaking about the competition, Hymas says, “Smart irrigation is complex, but our software is the easiest to use and provides features our clients need. Our system comes with a lifetime warranty; if a controller becomes obsolete, we will replace it for free. Plus, all customers get free firmware and software upgrades for life, as well as a dedicated account manager.

Smart Rain was recognized as one of the fastest-growing companies by Fast Company for the Next Big Things in Tech. They were also awarded the 2022 WaterSense Excellence award and will continue to provide the simplest solution to saving water, money, and time.
