Citing the first case study of Sanford in Florida, Hymas says the summer of 2022 proved challenging for the city; however, the city was able to overcome their challenges with the help of Smart Rain. With their workforce at 50 percent, the city did not have the necessary resources to check on multiple sites and review irrigation conditions. Smart Rain made it possible for their team to access sites and check conditions remotely.

Referencing the second case study, Hymas said that in recent years, San Antonio has been experiencing extreme drought. To mitigate this, city officials implemented strict irrigation restrictions—only allowing three maximum watering days during the week.

With seven athletic fields, the Burbank Sports Complex is one of the top ten water consumers in the SAISD District. To reduce their water consumption, maintain their green fields, and comply with irrigation cutbacks, SAISD knew they needed a change in their water management system.

SAISD enlisted Smart Rain to replace irrigation control systems for all sports fields in the complex. Smart Rain installed four controllers with rain sensors, which use precipitation rates to apply one inch of water per week during the hottest parts of the summer.

Through the system update and proactive management of the Burbank Sports Complex site, SAISD has been able to conserve 5,315,500 gallons of water—a 94 percent reduction—and $30,743 in just four months, while not compromising the integrity of the sports fields.
